Houston Tax Preparation Tip: 5 Ways to Protect Your Identity This Season

5. Get an Identity Projection PIN

An Identity Protection PIN, also known as an IP PIN, is a recent measure the Internal Revenue Service has initiated to help tax payers protect themselves from scammers filing false returns using their information. This 6 digit number is assigned to eligible taxpayers and helps prevent the misuse of a Social Security number on any fraudulently filed federal income tax returns.

To get a IP PIN of your own, simply visit the IRS’s special page, and follow the three steps of:

1. Determine your eligibility by seeing if you have received a CP01A Notice, acquired an IP PIN last year, if your e-file was rejected for incorrect IP PIN, received an official IRS letter inviting you to get an IP PIN, or filed a federal tax return from Georgia, Florida, or the District of Columbia.
2. Gather information including SSN, birthday, email address, filing status, and your mailing address from the most recently filed federal tax return.
3. Obtain your IP PIN by answering sensitive questions (only to the IRS) including personal, financial, and tax information, as well as clicking on the link in your email.
