Houston Bookkeeping Tip: Beware of This New Dent Repair Scam

We at B&J Bookkeeping & Taxes are always on alert for the latest in how scammers try to take advantage of honest people. We recently came across one such scam taking place near Houston in Brazoria county. As part of our scam series, we are taking an in depth look at how this dent repair scam is carried out, as well as what you can do about it.

1. How the Dent Repair Scam Happens

You come back to your car after eating dinner, watching a movie, etc. You find a note on your car. It reads “Sorry I dinged your car. Please call me at…” You think to yourself “wow, an honest person who left a note and is willing to pay for causing damage to my car.” But the real problems begin when you call the number.

The scammers are able to “spoof” or get information from your mobile phone number the second you are connected. Most people tend to immediately call from their cell phone, where they are more vulnerable than with a landline. You are then asked to answer questions or input your information, which is later stolen.

2. How You Can Avoid the Dent Repair Scam

As with most scams, use a little common sense if you think you may be about to fall victim to this scam. A few things you can do to protect yourself include:

  • Check your car for actual damage. If no new dents, dings, etc are visible, do not call.
  • Call the police if you do have damage. If for no other reason than to have an official record of it.
  • Look up the phone number. The Brazoria Sheriff reported that the scammers used an out of area phone code, 310 (California). It isn’t impossible for someone out of town to damage you’re your car. It’s just less likely.
  • Run a search for the phone number. Many sites keep lists of scam phone numbers which will show up on a search.
  • Call from a landline. Don’t rush to your cell phone if you suspect a scam. Call from a safer landline.
  • Do not enter any information into an automated system. No individual or even business would have an automated service take care this sort of transaction.
  • Don’t give sensitive information to a human. All you need in a real dent repair situation is their insurance information.

Just remember to use your best judgment. If it’s too good to be true, it is. Ask a trusted family member before calling if you are still unsure.
