The 2026 tax season will be here in less than month, and the IRS is recommending some simple steps now to make next year’s tax preparation go smooth. 1. No Taxes on Tips or Overtime
As was campaigned on, this coming year sees a new benefit to those of you earning tips and/or working overtime. In these cases, you may qualify to pay no taxes on any of this. While the details are still up in the air, there is this amazing guide for How to Pay no Tax on Tips.
2. Create or Update Your Account on IRS Online
Most people and businesses file their taxes online but that does not necessarily mean you have an online account at the IRS. Simply go here to create an account or sign in. They accept accounts for individuals, businesses, and even tax professionals like the ones we have here.
This IRS account allows you to have a look at your:
- Past and upcoming refunds.
- Past and present tax records.
- Any tax payments that are due.
- Important notifications, notices, letters, etc.

3. Be on the Lookout for a 1099
Do you have a seller’s account on a site like Amazon, eBay, Poshmark, or similar site? You may be required to pay taxes on these sales. Those of you who made over $20,000 in sales for goods and services with over 200 transactions should get ready for a 1099-K. It is designated for “Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions.” This includes income received through online marketplaces or payment apps such as Venmo. Taxpayers who receive this form should take it to their tax preparation expert.
4. Use Direct Deposit for Faster Refunds
We have no idea if tax refunds will go out any faster in 2026 than they have in previous years. However, we do know that clients who sign up for direct deposit as opposed to waiting for a check receive their refund faster. Be sure to have your bank details ready for your tax return expert.
