The Scam Email From Chase Bank

We know the email is correct because it came from chase@email.chase.com. Chase.com is the official url for the bank and any emails coming from here are legitimate. However, do not fall for emails that are named “Chase Bank.” Anyone can change their email name to Chase Bank, Warren Buffet, or whomever they like. But to be sure, don’t click on any links in an email you find sketchy. Simply contact your bank directly to get more information.

The Bookkeeping Services Scam

The email itself warned of:

  1. Impersonating a Chase worker – A scammer may contact you pretending to be an official Chase employee. It is one of the most popular banks in the country and many people have or have had accounts with them. They may contact you via email, phone call, or even text message. You are then probably told of some fraud regarding your account to trick you into providing sensitive information in order to gain access to this account.
  2. Fake phone numbers – Scammers may use technology that spoofs phone numbers to tell you the call is coming from Chase bank. However, it is not.
  3. Unusual requests for sending money – Scammers may try to trick you into thinking there has already been fraud on your account. They suggest transferring money to yourself to remedy this. Unfortunately, the account you end up transferring money to belongs to the scammer.

How to Avoid the Scam

Keep in mind that Chase employees will never ask you to transfer money to anyone as a way to resolve fraud. Feel free to call the toll free number, chat tool, or email used at the official Chase bank (or your bank) to resolve any issues. You don’t have to answer any call, email, text, etc. Contact them directly to go around any shady communications. Make sure you know the recipient and all their information before transferring any money via Zelle, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

We at B&J Bookkeeping believe it is essential to know what scams look like so you stay one step ahead of them. To read the entire list of safety tips from Chase, click here.
